Alright, so in T-minus something close to a month the adventure kicks off.
What is it we're doing, exactly? Well...
we're filling a van full of liquor, psychedelics, herb and starry-eyed guys and gals in need of an adventure. Starting from Florida and heading to California, with no real set path to get there. I'll
((Emma being the narrative voice, for the most part)) be handing out unlimited heaps of disposable cameras to everyone to use as they please and post the pictures once I get home. I'll also be cataloging everything in as much detail as my surely strung-out mind will be able to give. Most of this will be done in spiral notebooks, since I'll be in a rental van, but I'll update wherever I can squeeze a chance.
It's still a ways off, so we have yet to set an exact plan. I'm not even entirely sure who's going to be making the journey with me, but I'll keep everyone posted in the coming months. So far the tentative list of passangers is posted in my user profile, but I'll dedicate an entry to that once I've got a set list.
This is as much a typical road-trip to let off steam as it is a social experiment. I'd like to turn the whole thing into a photo essay, along with whatever writing I put together. Whatever becomes of it I know it's going to be well worthwhile, though. I can't not run into something insanely wonderful when you're traveling in the style and with the people I'll be traveling with.
And so California dreaming begins...
From "Song of the Open Road" by Walt Whitman:
My call is the call of battle, I nourish active rebellion,
He going with me must go well arm'd,
He going with me goes often with spare diet, poverty, angry enemies, desertions.
Allons! the road is before us!
It is safe — I have tried it — my own feet have tried it well — be not detain'd! Let the paper remain on the desk unwritten, and the book on the shelf unopen'd!
Let the tools remain in the workshop! let the money remain unearn'd!
Let the school stand! mind not the cry of the teacher!
Let the preacher preach in his pulpit! let the lawyer plead in the court, and the judge expound the law!
Camerado, I give you my hand!
I give you my love more precious than money,
I give you myself before preaching or law;
Will you give me yourself? Will you come travel with me?
Shall we stick by each other as long as we live?
